Looking to add a cozy, natural vibe to your Christmas decor without all the glitter and gold? Let me tell you about these adorable DIY Christmas trees made from toilet paper rolls. They’re simple, budget-friendly, and perfect for anyone who loves a rustic, woodland theme. Bonus? The kids can help too, making it a fun family craft!
Last year, we made little cardboard houses with tea lights for our holiday setup. This year, I wanted to add something to them while keeping that same natural, handmade feel of the arrangement. So, I came up with these cute trees, and they fit perfectly with branches, wood slices, and pinecones. Honestly, I didn’t expect them to turn out this good!
What You’ll Need
- Toilet paper rolls (finally, a reason to save those!)
- White macrame cord
- Jute twine
- Decorations: wooden stars, red buttons, wooden and red beads
- Hot glue gun
- Branches
- Wood slices
- Optional: red ribbon
Tree #1. Twisted Cords With a Star
Start by cutting a toilet paper roll and rolling it into a cone shape.
Secure the edges with hot glue—don’t skimp on the glue; you want this to hold. Once the cone is set, trim the bottom with scissors to make sure it sits flat.
Pro tip: If you’re working with kids, give them a bit of help with the glue gun—it gets super hot!.
For the first tree, glue the white macrame cord and jute twine to the inside of the cone. Then, start wrapping them both around the cone at the same time. Twist the two cords together as you go to create a cool, textured pattern.
Keep wrapping until you reach the bottom, then glue the ends in place. The finishing touch? A wooden star on top. It’s simple, elegant, and super charming.
Tree #2. Rustic But With Pops Of Color
This one’s my favorite. Wrap the cone with only jute twine, securing it at the bottom and top. Then, take the white macrame cord and wrap it around the tree in three stripes—don’t worry if it’s not perfect, that’s part of the charm.
Add red buttons along the stripes for a pop of color. For the top, glue on a stack of beads: one large wooden bead, a smaller one, and a little red one on top. It’s like a tiny tree topper—so cute, right?.
Assembly The Trees
This part is easier than it looks. Grab some wooden slices—I like the thicker ones for a sturdier base. Glue a small branch to the center of the slice, then attach your tree to the branch.
You can cover the glue with additional pieces of twine.
If you’re feeling fancy, wrap a bit of red ribbon around the base to tie the whole look together. It’s such a simple detail, but it makes a big difference.
Once your trees are done, they’ll look amazing as part of a natural holiday setup. I used mine to decorate a windowsill. They looks great alongside our cardboard Christmas village.
