I don’t know about you, but I always struggle with what to do when it comes to decorating my walls for Halloween. A garland is great, but sometimes you want something a little different, right? That’s where this project came in. While I was out for a walk by the beach (because sometimes you just need a short break), I stumbled upon the perfect driftwood branch. It was one of those moments where inspiration hit, and I knew it was going to be part of my Halloween decor. And with the holiday right around the corner, it felt like fate. Before we jump into the details, here’s everything I used to bring this wall hanging to life:
Why a Wall Hanging for Halloween?
Honestly, I wanted something that would bring a bit of boho charm into the spooky season. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but a lot of Halloween decor can feel a little…harsh? This was my attempt to soften it up a bit. Plus, I’m all about using what I’ve got on hand—so when I found that branch, it felt like the universe was telling me, “Hey, time to get crafty!”. Wall hangings are also great because they don’t take up floor space, which is a huge win if you’re like me and have too many things going on at ground level.
What You’ll Need
- A sturdy branch (mine was about 24 inches, but any size will do!)
- Black acrylic paint and a brush
- Yarn in orange and black
- Wooden beads (12mm diameter works great)
- Macramé cord (I used 4mm)
- Cardboard (for winding the yarn and making pom-poms)
- Scissors and glue
- Optional: A tiny decorative item—I used a little mushroom to give one of the gnomes a whimsical touch!
Painting the Branch
Okay, so the first step was painting the branch black. Easy enough, right? Well, here’s a tip: Make sure you’re working on cardboard or something to protect your surfaces. Black paint gets everywhere, everywhere. Once I had it coated and drying (which felt like forever, but it’s probably more like an hour), I started working on the fun stuff: gnomes and brooms.
Crafting the Witch Brooms
I love how simple these brooms are, but they look like you spent way more time on them than you actually did.
To make the brooms, I cut a piece of cardboard about 6-7 cm wide, wrapped some orange yarn around it.
Then I tied it off at the top with black yarn. The trick is to leave the black yarn long, so you can thread on wooden beads to make the broomstick.
Once the orange yarn is cut at the bottom, it starts to look like broom bristles.
The beads really bring the broomstick to life. I strung about seven beads onto each broomstick and tied them off with a loop for hanging.
That loop is essential, trust me. I made one broom in orange and another in black—because balance, right? Honestly, they’re so cute, I might just make a few more to scatter around the house.
Making Pom Pom Gnomes
I won't go into too much details about these little guys. Here is a tutorial showing how I make pom pom gnomes. I made two gnomes, one orange and one black, and added contrasting hats. You can totally get creative here. The hats are just yarn wrapped around cardboard, tied off, and stuffed.
Here is my team.
Assembling Wall Hanging Together
By the time I finished with the gnomes and brooms, my branch was dry and ready to go. Assembly is the best part! I started with an orange broom, then hung up the black gnome with the orange hat, followed by the orange gnome with the black hat, and finally the black broom. It’s like the decorations alternate perfectly. It felt like solving a fun puzzle—just getting the spacing right and making sure everything looked balanced.
The last step was adding the macramé cord to hang it all up. I used a 4mm cord, which gives the whole thing a bit of a rustic feel, but any strong string will work.
I love how this wall hanging turned out—it’s the perfect mix of spooky and cozy with just a touch of whimsy.
Plus, it was so much fun to make, and I love that it’s totally customizable to your style.
