Container gardening is great for desert areas. You can control the soil, water, and where your plants go. Plus, you can move the containers around to get the best sunlight and make your garden look beautiful. Here’s how to make your own desert container garden.
Pick The Right Spot
Choose a place that gets 5 to 6 hours of sun each day, all year long. Pick a spot you can see from inside your home, like near the family room window looking out to the patio or yard. This way, you can enjoy your garden from inside and outside.

Make sure it’s easy to water your plants. If you plan to use an irrigation system, check that there’s a good spot for the water valve. If you plan to water by hand, place your pots close to a hose so you don’t have to drag it too far. Grouping your pots together can also make watering easier.

Pick the Right Containers
Choose containers with good drainage to prevent water from sitting at the bottom. Terra cotta pots are great because they allow air to flow to the roots, but they dry out faster. Plastic pots retain moisture longer but may heat up in direct sun. Consider using different sizes and shapes to add variety to your garden.
Start With Good Soil
Use good potting soil for your plants. It should have a mix of peat moss, composted bark, compost, earthworm castings, perlite, and pumice. The soil should be moist but not clumpy or sandy. Fill the bottom of the pot with small rocks or broken pottery to improve drainage. Add soil, place your plant in the center, and fill around it with more soil. Press gently to secure the plant.

Water and Feed Your Plants Regularly
Use a water meter to check the moisture level in the soil every morning. When you plant new flowers, vegetables, or other plants, use a time-release fertilizer. Once the plants start growing, use a water-soluble fertilizer every two weeks. In hotter months, water your plants more frequently and provide shade if needed. During cooler months, reduce watering and protect plants from frost by moving them to a sheltered spot or covering them with cloth.

You can also add labels to each pot to keep track of different plants. Using chalkboard paint, you can create a surface on your pots that you can write on with chalk.
